A few of those were assigned, but most of them I've read on my own before, or afterwards, but read them anyway. Quite honestly, I'm sure a few of those I've read and forgotten; a lot of the ones I listed I only just remember reading and not much of what they were about. I'm quite surprised that a few titles weren't included, such as The House of the Scorpion, or The Stolen Child by Keith Donohue or The Island by Victoria Hislop. Then again, I'm biased: most of the books I've read I thought were totally awesome. I also find it weird that "Goosebumps" made the list but not "Animorphs."

I should make a list of book recommendations sometime.
I've read other works by Eoin Colfer and Wilbur Smith, but not the works listed above.
I also find some things interesting about the BBC list. The Harry Potter series, for instance, is broken up into several books, but His Dark Materials, Goosebumps, and the Princess Diaries are not.
But, I read a ton of classical literature in high school, starting with Animal Farm before my Freshman year, and rounding off with Hamlet, Macbeth, and Othello by my senior year. I did a lot of British literature in that time, and so that's why so many on the list were assigned. Some of them I enjoyed (Pride and Prejudice), but many of them became too annoying (One Hundred Years of Solitude comes to mind). I think if I actually tried to read them now, I might enjoy them a little more, but who knows :)
With Harry Potter, the individual books broke so many records as far as the contemporary amount of people who actually READ FOR FUN and how much money it made that a lot of the individual books are actually noteworthy in a lot of ways.
