A Day In The Life

Blue Team (General Medicine): Friday, July 22nd

This rotation was a logistics nightmare. First, we were supposed to have rotations each day from 6 am – 6 pm (with rotations every 3-6 hours, depending on the rotation). But they decided this year to mix it up and start at different times. So while the student starting on Emergency started at 4:30 am, we on the Blue Team started at 8 am. Then, the team was divided between UVA physicians and students and EVMS physicians and students, which made it difficult to fairly distribute the patients. Then, we started with the EKG machine in our area, and so we were being crowded out by the patients waiting for an EKG.

But, it was still a good experience, I just wish it had been better logistically.

Bad Teeth

Dental: Friday, July 22nd

Getting Them Through The Line

Triage: Friday, July 22nd

My final rotation on Friday was triage. It's a lot more interesting than it sounds, I promise. We do everything before they go back into medical to see the physicians and students back there. So, we started with basic vitals: blood pressure, blood glucose, temperature, respiratory rate, heart rate, and O2 saturation. I'm getting pretty good at getting a manual bp reading, though I still don't do it the way they taught us to in CPD, which may be problematic when it comes time to be tested on those.

Historical Roots

Courtesy of the MAA and the NAA*, we did a few 'cultural' activities on Friday and Saturday evening. The first activity was heading to Big Stone Gap (about 20 or so miles from Wise) to attend an outdoor theater production. It was held behind the June Tolliver Playhouse, where the character of June Tolliver stayed while in school in Big Stone Gap.
